Deinotherium - New Mammal for ARK

Deinotherium by Wildcard

The world of ARK: Survival Ascended is expanding with another giant! On March 26, 2025, the Deinotherium was announced as the next major mammal for the game. While many players may have hoped for another dinosaur, this prehistoric mega-mammal brings new challenges and tactical opportunities.

Deinotherium, also known as Dinotherium or "tusked elephant," belongs to the extinct group of proboscideans and was an early and very successful representative of this animal group. It lived from the Miocene to the early Pleistocene, approximately 22 million to 1 million years ago, in large parts of the Old World. Particularly later forms of this genus reached gigantic sizes and were among the largest land mammals of their time. Characteristic of Deinotherium are the downward-curved tusks in the lower jaw and a unique dental structure that distinguishes it from later elephant species. Due to this dental structure, it is believed that Deinotherium primarily fed on soft plants.

Deinotherium – A New Mammoth Alternative?

The Deinotherium is larger than a mammoth and dominates the open plains of ARK. But beware: these massive creatures are not only impressive but also extremely dangerous. When they feel threatened, they launch a destructive charge. Particularly dangerous is their ability to mobilize herd members with powerful calls – a single fight can quickly turn into a devastating stampede.

Behavior

WARNING! This described behavior is from the mod "ARK Additions" and may be slightly modified by Wildcard.

Wild Behavior: Beware of the Herd!

Deinotheria are hierarchically organized herd animals that defend themselves aggressively. When a threat approaches, they take a threatening stance that can quickly turn into an attack. Especially the leaders of the herd, usually the males, are extremely strong and deal massive damage. Their attacks are not only powerful but also tactical: they penetrate armor and cause additional damage against carnivores. Additionally, they can regenerate by feeding on carcasses – a disturbing ability for a herbivore.

Appearance and Differences Between Males and Females

The Deinotherium stands out from other proboscideans with its distinctive downward-facing tusks beneath its mouth. Interestingly, they exhibit sexual dimorphism: while the males have longer tusks and a dense beard, the females are less hairy and their tusks are shorter. These differences are not only visual but also influence behavior within the herd.

Tactics in Combat Against the Deinotherium

Attacking a Deinotherium herd head-on is usually a fatal mistake. The best strategy is to separate individual animals from the group, especially the strong males. A fast mount like the Procoptodon can be helpful for executing targeted attacks and escaping in time. In direct combat, firearms like the pump-action shotgun are particularly effective, as Deinotheria have a certain resistance to automatic turrets. Even large predators like the Giganotosaurus struggle, as Deinotheria deal additional damage to carnivores and can heal themselves from carcasses. Their greatest weakness is their slow turning radius, which allows for quick attacks to outmaneuver them.

Taming: How to Tame a Deinotherium

Taming a Deinotherium requires a lot of patience and skill – and is only possible for players at level 95 and above. First, the herd must be thinned out, as the Deinotherium can only be tamed alone. The creature indicates its readiness through movements of its ears and trunk: if the ears are outstretched but the trunk is retracted, the taming process can begin. Using beer as bait (in the last slot of the hotbar), approach carefully and wait for the Deinotherium to automatically pick it up. This process must be repeated several times, always paying attention to the animal's body language.

Deinotherium in ARK Survival Ascended – A New Monster for the Open Plains

With its massive size, unique mechanics, and deadly attack strategies, the Deinotherium significantly expands the gameplay in ARK. While it resembles the mammoth in its role, its herd dynamics, armor-piercing attacks, and ability to heal the group provide a completely new tactical depth.
